79-year-old New York pilot injured in July 5 crash of small plane dies from his injuries

ROYALTON, New York — Authorities say a 78-year-old man has died from injuries suffered when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near a western New York airport earlier this month.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says John Schnabel of Williamsville died Wednesday at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Officials say he was piloting a small aircraft on July 5 when it crashed soon after taking off from Royalton Airport in the town of Royalton.

Deputies say the plane crashed into thick foliage about 150 yards from the paved runway. Schnable was trapped in the cockpit and had to be removed by emergency crews. No one else was on board.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by federal investigators.
