Report: Jefferson County Jail can again house ICE detainees

MOUNT VERNON, Illinois — A southern Illinois county jail can again house U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports (http://bit.ly/12RYhym ) that Jefferson County Jail lost its contract with ICE late last year because of medical staffing. That led the county to cut expenses because the contract was expected to bring in $3 million in revenue. The county announced more than two dozen layoffs and had to rework its budget.

Jefferson County Board Chairman Robert White says he hopes the detainees will be coming back in the next week or so, but there isn't a guarantee of when.

The county expects to rehire up to 20 corrections officers.
