WURTSBORO, New York — State police say a motorist has been fatally injured after crashing into a vehicle while driving the wrong way on a state road.

Authorities say the accident happened when a vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lane about 9:15 p.m. Sunday on Route 17 in Wurtsboro. The driver of the other vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital. The names of the motorists have not been released.

Sullivan County Fire and Rescue says on its Facebook page that the cars hit head-on and that the occupants of both vehicles were trapped inside.

A section of Route 17 was closed for about two hours following the accident.
