MAMAKATING, New York — State police say a motorist has been fatally injured after crashing into a vehicle while driving the wrong way on an upstate New York road.

Troopers say the accident happened when 24-year-old Nicholas Kay of Montgomery drove east in the westbound lanes about 9:15 p.m. Sunday on Route 17 in the Sullivan County town of Mamakating.

Police say Kay died when he collided head-on with a car driven by a 24-year-old man from Vestal just east of Exit 113. The other driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

A section of Route 17 was closed for about two hours following the accident.

State police are asking anyone who may have seen Kay driving the wrong way to contact them at 845-888-5385.
