SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A Maine woman was accidentally shot in the face by a Scarborough homeowner who was investigating an argument in his driveway, police said.
Police say they found Carol Dorney, 47, of Portland lying in the driveway with a gunshot wound to her mouth on Thursday around 9:45 p.m. She was hospitalized in intensive care and is expected to survive, Scarborough Police Detective Sgt. Rick Rouse.
The homeowner came out of his house with a handgun to investigate two men arguing in his driveway about a truck, police said. He said he thought he heard someone say "I'll kill you," police told the (Portland Press Herald http://bit.ly/1axeIDt).
The homeowner fumbled with the gun trying to load it and it fired, hitting Dorney, Rouse said.
The homeowner knew the people in his driveway but did not know who they were when he came out of the house, Rouse said.
The shooting appears to have been an accident, Rouse said. He said he didn't expect charges to be filed against the homeowner but that the shooting is still under investigation and will be referred to the district attorney's office.
