SYRACUSE, New York — Syracuse police say a taxi driver is in serious condition after he was stabbed by a passenger who tried to rob him.

Lt. Eric Carr says the 44-year-old driver picked up a fare at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday.

Police say that after riding for a few blocks, the passenger showed a knife and demanded money. He then stabbed the driver in the face and chest.

The driver was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he's listed in serious but stable condition.

The attacker fled on foot. Police say no money was taken.
