Firefighters blame smoking materials for fire that damaged Raleigh apartment building

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Raleigh fire officials say 20 people have been displaced by an apartment fire which they blame on improperly discarded smoking materials.

Wednesday morning's fire damaged more than half of a three-story apartment building on the northeast side of the city. Fire investigator Lt. Grant Williams said fire was coming from the roof of the building when the first engine arrived after 2 a.m.

Williams said all the residents of the building were able to leave safely. He said it took firefighters almost an hour to get the fire under control, and fire, smoke and water damaged 12 units.

The Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents find alternative housing.
