Saugus man charged after shooting aggressive dog with allegedly unlicensed gun

Share/Save/Bookmark

SAUGUS, Massachusetts — A Saugus man is facing animal cruelty and firearms charges for shooting his pet bulldog after it allegedly bit several people in the home, including a 9-month-old child.

Police say 50-year-old Richard Maltais (mal-TYE'-us) shot the dog three times in the head Sunday.

Investigators say Maltais did not have a valid firearms license. Police recovered two guns from his home.

He was not arrested but will be summoned to court to face the charges.

Saugus' animal control officer says the dog's remains have been sent to a lab to determine it had rabies.

Maltais says he's had the English bulldog for about a year and it had never before acted aggressively. He also says police knew he had guns.
