PURCHASE, New York — President Barack Obama says there's one reason Congress is broken and it's because the Republican Party is captive to an ideologically rigid, unproductive and cynical group.

Speaking at a fundraiser Friday, Obama urged like-minded Democrats to vote in November's midterm elections.

He says even if they believe in him, they still need a Congress that works with him.

Obama spoke at a pre-Labor Day barbecue held at the Westchester County, New York, home of Wall Street consultant Robert Wolf.

Wolf is also an Obama fundraiser who served on Obama advisory boards on jobs and the economy. Wolf also plays golf with the president.

About 250 people attended. Tickets costs up to $32,400.

Obama also was addressing an event later Friday in Rhode Island benefiting the fundraising arm for House Democrats.
