Ocean Springs Harbor improvements may be delayed because of shortfall

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi — A $750,000 improvement project at the Ocean Springs harbor may be delayed.

The Mississippi Press reports ( ) that one reason is a $150,000 funding shortfall. Also city, county and harbor officials are worried about the prospect of having sections of the harbor shut down during peak boating season.

Formally known as the Jackson County Small Craft Harbor, the harbor is owned and operated by Jackson County, but the City of Ocean Springs is leading the improvement project.

Harbormaster Danny Jalanivich said officials have been discussing putting off the project until fall.

Jalanivich noted that even if the Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen accepted the lowest bid this month, it would likely be March before the project would begin, with work continuing through the peak boating season.
