McLEAN, Virginia — A D.C. man has suffered serious injuries after a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the Capital Beltway in northern Virginia.
Virginia State Police say the accident happened about 11 a.m. Wednesday on the beltway's Inner Loop, just before the American Legion Bridge.
Police say the driver of a Ford Explorer, 40-year-old Nakatoke Kapingiri (nah-keh-TOE'-kee cap-inn-GEAR'-ee) of Washington, lost control when he swerved to miss a cardboard box. The Explorer bounced off a jersey wall and skidded across the northbound lanes. The tractor-trailer, driven by an unidentified Kentucky man, jackknifed attempting to dodge the Explorer.
Kapingiri was flown to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police charged him with failing to maintain control of his vehicle.
The tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries.
