Bartlesville teen charged in school shooting plot pleads not guilty to charge at arraignment

BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma — An 18-year-old Bartlesville man has pleaded not guilty to planning a school shooting.

Sammie Eaglebear Chavez was arraigned Wednesday in Washington County District Court on a charge of planning, attempting or conspiring to perform an act of violence. He was found competent to stand trial earlier this week. A report by a state psychologist says Chavez is depressed and worried about his case but that he's not mentally impaired.

Prosecutors allege Chavez planned to lure classmates into the Bartlesville High School auditorium where he would chain the doors shut and begin shooting. He was arrested Dec. 14 — the same day as the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut

Chavez's mother has said she doesn't believe her son seriously planned any violence.

Chavez remains jailed on $1 million bond.
