Conn. House approves Election Day voter registration legislation, bill now goes to Senate

HARTFORD, Conn. — The House of Representatives has approved a bill that would allow eligible people to register to vote and cast their ballot on Election Day.

House members discussed the legislation for more than five hours Monday. It now moves to the Senate.

"Passage of this legislation demonstrates Connecticut 's commitment to fair, accessible elections , and I applaud the House for their action on this bill," Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement. "Using the technology we have available to preserve the integrity of our elections , expand access to the ballot box, and improve participation in the public process will allow our democracy flourish."

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy issued a statement saying the bill demonstrates Connecticut's "commitment to fair, accessible elections."

Democratic Rep. Russell Morin, co-chairman of the legislature's Planning and Development Committee, said there has been a small increase in voter participation in the nine states and the District of Columbia where Election Day registration has been allowed.

But numerous Republican lawmakers expressed concern about potential fraud.

Under the bill, an applicant must declare under oath that they have not previously voted in the election and submit identification showing a residential address.
