Sporting Lisbon beats Boavista 2-1 to strengthen hold of 3rd place in Portuguese league


LISBON, Portugal — Sporting Lisbon beat Boavista 2-1 in a match both teams finished with 10 men on Sunday to strengthen its hold of third place in the Portuguese league.

Adrien Silva scored seconds into the match for Sporting.

Boavista's Ze Manuel leveled in the seventh minute from a counterattack, and he hit the goalframe seconds after Sporting lost Tobias Figueiredo to a direct red in the 45th.

But Sporting substitute Islam Slimani scored to restore Sporting's lead for good in the 66th.

Boavista's Philipe Sampaio earned his second booking in the 89th.

Sporting took advantage of Braga's 1-0 loss at Guimaraes on Friday to move 10 points clear in third place.

Also on Sunday, Estoril fought back for a 2-1 win at Setubal, while Arouca won 2-0 at Penafiel to keep it in last place.
