AUGUSTA, Maine — A donation by independent U.S. Senate candidate Angus King to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee has prompted criticism from Republican candidates in the Maine race.
King also says credit card records show the tickets were purchased before it was known that Sen. Olympia Snowe was not going to seek re-election, so King could not have been a Senate candidate at that point.
Two of the six GOP candidates, Charlie Summers and Rick Bennett, say the $10,000 donation in February hints that King will caucus with the Democrats if he's elected.
King responded Wednesday that the two tickets to an Obama dinner in Portland were used by his son and daughter-in-law. King also says credit card records show the tickets were purchased before it was known that Sen. Olympia Snowe was not going to seek re-election, so King could not have been a Senate candidate at that point.
King also noted he voted for Republican George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential race.
