Lucedale man convicted of running down George County sheriff

NATCHEZ, Miss. — A jury Friday found a Lucedale man guilty of capital murder in the 2010 death of George County Sheriff Garry Welford.

Christopher Lee Baxter, 26, was immediately sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Welford was run over by Baxter's truck while he was putting spikes on a road in an attempt to end a chase. Baxter and his girlfriend, Brandy Nicole Williams, were fleeing a George County patrol car when the truck hit Welford, 62.

Williams was driving the truck. Baxter was wanted for missing his sentencing on a drug charge, according to officials.

The trial was moved to Natchez in Adams County because of pre-trial publicity.

Baxter was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Williams, 20, also of Lucedale, faces a capital murder trial Aug. 27 in Lafayette County.
