CHARLESTON, West Virginia — Longtime Kanawha County Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Jr. is retiring.

Secretary Melody Shannon tells media outlets that the 81-year-old Zakaib (zuh-KAYB') plans to retire on Aug. 31.

Zakaib was appointed to the bench in 1986. He lost a re-election bid but was reappointed when Margaret Workman was elected to the state Supreme Court in 1988.

Zakaib also served four terms in the House of Delegates as a Republican.
