Jackson man charged in neighbor's beheading waives preliminary exam, will stand trial

JACKSON, Mich. — A Michigan man accused in the beheading of his 59-year-old neighbor will stand trial in her murder.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (http://bit.ly/JKp2tb ) that Leo Kwaske's preliminary examination was waived Friday. The case moves on to Jackson County Circuit Court.

Shirley Meeks' body was found Oct. 15 in her Jackson apartment, about 70 miles west of Detroit. Her head also was found.

The 47-year-old Kwaske was charged with felony murder, mutilation of a dead body and first-degree home invasion. Doctors have determined he is competent to stand trial, but was insane at the time Meeks was killed.

The newspaper reports that prosecutors expect Kwaske to be found not guilty by reason of insanity. He then would be committed to a mental institution.
