Facebook co-founder to give up to $100K to same-sex marriage supporters in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine — One of the co-founders of Facebook and his partner are giving up to $100,000 to supporters of a referendum to legalize same-sex marriage in Maine.

Democratic activists Chris Hughes and Sean Eldridge say they'll match donations up to $100,000 over the next four weeks.

Eldridge says he hopes their support "will motivate others to invest in the campaign."

Hughes is publisher and editor-in-chief of The New Republic, in addition to helping to found Facebook. Eldridge is president of Hudson River Ventures and senior adviser to Freedom to Marry.
