SDSU Extension hosting saline and sodic soil management workshop on Tuesday


PIERPONT, South Dakota — SDSU Extension is hosting the Saline and Sodic Soil Management Workshop and Field Tour on Tuesday.

The event from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. features soil experts and specialists and a field tour.

Morning topics include redefining saline and sodic soil classifications, issues with salty soils and management options. Afternoon sessions will cover soil stability tests, mapping saline soils on the farm, tools to measure soil salinity and questions to ask when submitting soils for salt analysis.

Visits to the field site will include a soil pit to demonstrate issues with saline/sodic soils, soil amendment plots and a discussion about salt type in fields and potential management options.

The meeting location is 202 1st St., and signs will be posted along South Dakota Highway 27.
