Man killed, 40 people displaced by apartment building fire; Cause of blaze under investigation

NEWARK, New Jersey — An elderly man was killed and roughly 40 other people were displaced by a fire that severely damaged several units in a northern New Jersey apartment building.

Essex County prosecutors say 83-year-old Earl Johnson died in the fire at the Pavilion Apartments in Newark. It started around 1:30 p.m. Saturday in his 12th floor unit, but the cause of the blaze remained under investigation Sunday.

Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. No other injuries were reported in the blaze.

Authorities say the fire was contained to Johnson's apartment, but at least 16 other apartments had smoke and/or water damage. Most of the residents displaced by the fire were expected to return home sometime Sunday.
