Saginaw council passes $111 million budget, trims 13 firefighters amid cost-cutting efforts

SAGINAW, Michigan — The Saginaw City Council has passed a $111 million citywide budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year that includes cutting 13 firefighter positions.

The Saginaw News reports ( ) the budget approved Monday comes amid another year of cost-cutting efforts. Officials say, however, that the firefighter jobs could be saved if a request for $2 million in federal funding is granted by June 30.

In 2013, the newspaper reports the city budget was balanced almost entirely on the back of the police department. Cuts at the time reduced police staffing.
