GERING, Neb. — Officials say two dogs attacked by a skunk near Gering had to be euthanized because of rabies.
KNEB radio in Scottsbluff (http://bit.ly/IrZLDN ) says the attacks happened last week. One dog was in a kennel at a house. The other dog was at nearby house.
The skunk that attacked the dog in the kennel was shot and tested positive for rabies. The other dog was euthanized after it showed signs of having rabies.
He says it's a reminder to residents to stay away from wild animals and to make sure all pets are vaccinated against the disease.
It was not clear if the same skunk attacked both dogs.
Scotts Bluff County Health Director Bill Wineman says it's the third positive rabies test involving a skunk since February. He says it's a reminder to residents to stay away from wild animals and to make sure all pets are vaccinated against the disease.
