ATLANTA — Testimony in the Atlanta Public Schools test cheating trial began with the mother of a former student outlining concerns over how her daughter could struggle through the school year but pass state exams.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://on-ajc.com/1vsTGPE) reported Tuesday that Justina Collins, mother of the now 17-year-old girl, said she tried speaking with Cascade Elementary School's principal and district officials about her daughter's progress to no avail.

Collins' daughter testified that she'd raise her hand if she didn't understand a test question and her third grade teacher would give her answers.

Former school board member Anne Harper also said ex-superintendent Beverly Hall told board members not to visit schools or talk to parents and principals.

Hall is battling breast cancer and isn't on trial with the other 12 defendants.
