DALLAS — A Dallas police officer standing next to the officer who shot a mentally ill man has received a 15-day suspension for his actions in the incident.
Dallas police said Thursday that Officer Christopher Watson was untruthful in a sworn statement and violated police procedure.
Watson gave erroneous information to officers investigating a disputed October incident in a south Dallas neighborhood. Watson reported that another officer, Cardan Spencer, only shot and wounded Bobby Gerald Bennett after Bennett lunged at them.
But a neighbor's surveillance video shows Bennett did not come close to the officers before crumpling to the ground.
Watson's suspension is expected to start soon, though he can appeal.
Police Chief David Brown fired Spencer. Prosecutors have not yet presented an aggravated assault case against Spencer to a grand jury.
