Northern Illinois University begins search for new police chief

DEKALB, Illinois — Northern Illinois University has announced a national search for a new police chief nearly three months after firing longtime chief Donald Grady.

The DeKalb school announced Tuesday that it's forming a search committee for an effort that's expected to take about three months. The university fired Grady from his $200,000-a-year job on Feb. 19. He is accused of mishandling evidence in an investigation into allegations that a campus police officer sexually assaulted a student in October 2011. Grady has denied the accusation.

Last month the FBI searched the NIU police station seeking communications between Grady and a vice president who took a leave of absence.

NIU officials say they hope to have a new police chief during the fall semester. Candidate interviews are expected in late July.
