DETROIT — A Detroit man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 13-year-old girl who was shot while playing with a rifle in his eastside home.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says that 45-year-old Ivan Berrien also is charged with second-degree child abuse and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The girl and Berrien's 14-year-old son were playing Tuesday afternoon with the rifle that police say wasn't properly secured. It fired once, striking her in the head.

Three younger children also were in the home.

Prosecutors say the children were left alone when Berrien left to pick up a pizza. He's in jail and is expected to appear for arraignment Friday morning in Detroit's 36th District Court.

Court records don't list an attorney for Berrien.
