MANSFIELD, Louisiana — Veteran DeSoto Parish School Board member McLawrence Fuller Sr. has resigned after 34 years on the board.

Fuller, of Grand Cane, submitted his resignation Friday, citing ongoing health problems and the need to recuperate. The Times reports (http://bit.ly/1kEssFr ) since Fuller's term is not set to expire until Dec. 31, someone will be appointed to temporarily fill the seat.

The board has 10 days to fill the vacancy. Those interested in Fuller's seat are encouraged to attend Thursday's board meeting to address the board about why they want to serve. Superintendent Cade Brumley says the remaining 10 board members will vote on Fuller's successor.

Qualifying for the November elections is Aug. 20-22.
