PORTAGE, Indiana — A northwestern Indiana port authority has hired two marinas to clear a log jam that's preventing about 40 boats from reaching Lake Michigan.

Portage Port Authority Chairman John Smolar tells The (Munster) Times (http://bit.ly/1zZ5eLA ) that torrential rains Aug. 21 caused trees and debris to rush through the east branch of the Burns Waterway from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and become lodged under the a bridge.

Smolar says it's the largest log jam he's ever seen.

Kurt Miller of Miller's Westerman's Marina — one of the marinas hired for the work — told the Port Authority last week that it would likely take two days of work to open up the waterway and another three or four days to clear all of the debris.
