Ex-NYC detective who accidentally shot partner pleads guilty to drunken driving, assault

NEW YORK — A former New York City police detective who accidentally shot his partner in the wrist has pleaded guilty to drunken driving and a misdemeanor assault charge.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says ex-detective Jay Poggi entered the plea Friday. Poggi's plea agreement calls for him to complete a 12-week alcohol treatment program, among other conditions.

His lawyer hasn't immediately returned a call.

Authorities say Poggi had taken out his revolver to show his partner the weapon's hammer when it discharged. It happened in a car in Queens this past April.

The 57-year-old Poggi drove his partner to a hospital. Prosecutors say Poggi failed a field sobriety test after arriving at the hospital with bloodshot eyes.

He was fired in May.
