Deadline for new water tower missed, but Clear Lake OKs company offer to tear down old tower

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa — Mason City officials have accepted a free offer to tear down the city's old water tower.

The offer came from Landmark Structures, of Fort Worth, Texas, which has missed construction deadlines on the new, 1 million-gallon water tower. The company pulled workers off the project last month when the weather turned too cold for painting the inside of the new bowl.

The Mason City Globe Gazette ( ) says the new deadline is May 9.

The city could have assessed the company $500 per day in liquidated damages, but council members decided instead to accept the Landmark offer. The cost of demolition has been estimated at between $40,000 and $50,000.
