Man dies when struck by freight train in Colleton County


YEMASSEE, South Carolina — Authorities are investigating the death of a man in Colleton County who was struck and killed by a freight train.

Area media outlets report the accident happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday in Yemassee. A woman who was with the man says he tried to reach out and touch the train when he was struck.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy says the crossing lights and warning arms at the CSX grade crossing were working properly.

The man's name has not yet been released while relatives are notified.
