1 dead, several injured after fire breaks out in south Baltimore apartment building

BALTIMORE — Fire officials say one person is dead and several others were injured after a fire broke out in a south Baltimore apartment building.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building on Fairhaven Avenue in the Curtis Bay area of the city around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday and found fire and smoke in a basement apartment.

Fire department spokesman Ian Brennan says one man found in the basement of the building has died. Brennan says one woman was rescued from a top floor and five other people, including two children, jumped from windows.

Several people were taken to area hospitals, but details of their injuries are not available.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
