AMES, Iowa — Former Iowa State basketball star Melvin Ejim has been named the university's male athlete of the year.

Ejim earned second-team All-America honors from The Associated Press after averaging 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds a game last season. Ejim was the Big 12's Player of the Year and helped lead the Cyclones to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 2001.

Ejim is the first men's basketball player to be named Iowa State's athlete of the year since Jake Sullivan in 2004.
