DETROIT — A settlement has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit against a suburban Detroit man who killed an unarmed woman on his porch instead of calling police.
The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/1IeQXOI ) a settlement was reached Friday in the civil case against 56-year-old Theodore Wafer, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2013 death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. A judge has approved the agreement.
Attorney Gerald Thurswell, who represents McBride's parents, says a confidentiality agreement requires financial details stay secret.
Wafer was sentenced in September to at least 17 years in prison after the Dearborn Heights man told McBride's family he would carry "guilt and sorrow forever."
Wafer is white and McBride was black, and some wondered in the aftermath of the shooting whether race was a factor.
