NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans coroner has identified the man who was shot to death by a police officer over the weekend as 60-year-old Christopher Olmstead.
Olmstead died Saturday morning. Police said he had gotten into his vehicle and was driving erratically, crashing through a gate hitting houses and parked cars in his Lower 9th Ward neighborhood.
A resident flagged down Detective Timothy Bender, a detective who was working on an unrelated case in the area.
Olmstead, who was unarmed, got out of his vehicle and fought with Bender. Police said Bender, who was in uniform, fired his weapon in self-defense. The coroner, Dr. Jeffrey Rouse, said Monday that Olmstead was hit in the neck, chest and abdomen by bullets that entered the front of his body. The shooting remains under investigation.
