MIDLAND, Michigan — A Michigan man is charged with murder and first-degree child abuse after authorities say he's responsible for the death of his girlfriend's 4-month-old daughter.
WSGW-AM and the Midland Daily News report Richard Watson of Mio was arraigned Tuesday. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf and a judge ordered he get a court-appointed lawyer. He was denied bond and a hearing is scheduled Sept. 8.
Authorities say rescue workers responded Aug. 9 to the Ikea store in Wayne County's Canton Township, a Detroit suburb, after Evelyn Patricia Legacy became unresponsive. She had a brain injury and fractures. The girl was taken to a hospital, where she died Friday.
Authorities say she was with her mother and Watson and investigators believe the child was injured at a Midland home.
