Father says San Bernardino officer who was shot in head can speak

SAN BERNARDINO, California — The father of a San Bernardino police officer critically wounded in a shooting says his son can speak, mostly repeating phrases.

Gabriel Garcia is recovering from what is hopefully his last major brain surgery last week, according to his father, police Capt. Ron Garcia.

The elder Garcia told the Sun newspaper on Wednesday ( ) that Gabriel has good and bad days but sounds like himself when he speaks.

The 31-year-old suffered brain injuries in the Aug. 22 shooting and has been in intensive care since.

Garcia and his partner were approaching a group of people when one man opened fire with a handgun and an assault rifle.

Garcia was hit once in the head. His partner killed the gunman.

Three people have been charged with attempted murder.
