SPEARFISH, South Dakota — Construction is wrapping up on an expansion of Spearfish Regional Hospital.

The work scheduled to be complete on Dec. 15 will boost the hospital's surgery-related space from about 3,400 square feet to about 12,000 square feet, the Black Hills Pioneer reported (http://bit.ly/1yTDN7D ).

The goal of the expansion is to enable the hospital to handle an increase in the number of surgery patients.

"If somebody wanted to have a joint replacement, for example, we were getting to a six- to eight-week wait time, so we really needed to expand our capacity," hospital CEO Larry Veitz said.

The $6.2 million project also includes renovation of the existing hospital — work that is to begin in January and wrap up in March.

The expansion will improve not just surgical areas but the overall quality of the hospital, said Dustin Smoot, a general surgeon and director of surgical services.

"It allows patients to be comfortable from the time they come in to the time they leave," he said.
