NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A solar array production plant in North Las Vegas has cut its workforce by two-thirds less than a year after opening.
The Las Vegas Sun reports (http://bit.ly/zMRBgj ) that Flextronics Industrial laid off about 200 of 300-plus employees Tuesday.
Singapore-based Flextronics is the staffing partner with Seal Beach, Calif.-based Amonix Inc. in the $18 million plant.
An Amonix executive calls the layoffs a temporary "retooling" to roll out a next-generation product.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval last May hailed the arrival of the plant to make concentrated photovoltaic systems.
The company got a nearly $6 million American Reinvestment and Recovery Act tax credit and $12 million from private investors to open.
An Amonix spokeswoman says the layoffs were planned before company CEO Brian Robertson was killed in a plane crash last month.
