LINCOLN, Nebraska — Calvin Strong ran for 197 yards and a touchdown, and second-ranked Omaha North won its first state football championship with a 23-21 victory over No. 3 Omaha Westside in the Class A final Tuesday night.
Strong matched his career high with 39 carries, and he finished the season with more than 2,900 yards rushing.
North (12-1) went 73 yards in 12 plays to take a two-point lead with 7:21 left. Payton Nelson scored from the 1 two plays after the Vikings converted a fourth-and-2.
Westside (11-2) punted and turned the ball over on downs on its next two series. The Warriors got the ball back at its 27 with 11 seconds left. North began celebrating after two incomplete passes.
Nelson was 9 of 13 for 124 yards. Marquise Lewis caught three passes for 104 yards and a TD for the Vikings.
Westside's Christian Hagan passed for 194 yards and two TDs.
