NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut — Fire officials in North Haven are trying to determine what caused an early morning fire that killed a man whose body was found in the basement.

Firefighters were called to the house on the 1700 block of Hartford Turnpike early Sunday morning, just after midnight. Authorities say another man in the home called 911 after a smoke detector went off and woke him up.

Officials say the man who called 911 and a dog were able to get out of the house unharmed. Crews found the other man's body when they went down into the basement to put the fire out.

Authorities haven't released the victim's name.

Neighbors say an elderly man and his son lived in the house.
