Gary schools have long list of needed repairs, few financial resources to address them

GARY, Indiana — Gary school officials say they need $6.5 million to repair and renovate the city's schools. But the district is scrambling to find money for the work.

A majority of the schools that will open this fall need work. Five other schools are being closed.

Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt tells The Times ( ) that money for the work will come from the school closings and teacher and staff retirements. The district also plans to tap an insurance settlement to repair January storm damage at the Bailly school.

But the scope of the work exceeds the district's resources.

Facilities Director Charles Prewitt says the district can't continue "patching" the schools.

Democratic Sen. Earline Rogers of Gary says she's broached the idea of help from the Legislature to key lawmakers.
