ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida — A sheriff's deputy responding to a domestic disturbance in northeast Florida fatally shot a man in St. Johns County.

Officials say deputies responded to the call after 9 p.m. Sunday in the northwest district of the county.

The sheriff's office says a woman called to report that her estranged husband, 51-year-old Daniel Torres of Jacksonville, was trying to force his way into her house.

The office says Torres had broken windows in the home, and he confronted deputies with a knife when they ordered him to stop. Deputy Christina Dobbs fired her rifle, killing Torres.

Dobbs has been with the sheriff's office since 2007 and was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
