Deputies charge husband of missing Charleston woman with obstruction of justice

CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Authorities say they have charged the husband of a Charleston woman missing for more than two years with lying to police.

Charleston County deputies arrested 42-year-old Robert McCaffrey on Saturday on an obstruction of justice charge.

Investigators say McCaffrey lied about several things during the investigation, including when he saw his wife in bed the night she disappeared and that his wife found a safe in their home with $110,000 on it.

Deputies didn't talk about what the arrest means in their investigation into Gayle McCaffrey's disappearance.

Defense lawyer Chris Lizzi says the charge is appalling and Robert McCaffrey was arrested so the sheriff's office could look like it was doing something to find Gayle McCaffrey.

Deputies say Robert McCaffrey's wife was last seen in March 2012.
