University of North Carolina Chapel Hill reviewing how it handles sexual assault cases

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina — The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill says it is creating a task force of students, faculty and staff to review the school's policies for handling sexual assault cases.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported (http://bit.ly/16sypMF) the school announced the plan Wednesday.

The university's handling of sexual assault is under federal investigation after several women filed a complaint earlier this year with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

There is a second federal investigation on whether the school properly released sex assault statistics under the federal campus crime reporting law.

The 21-member task force this month will begin reviewing the university's handling of student-on-student complaints of harassment, sexual misconduct or discrimination. The panel will work through the summer to come up with recommendations.
