LAPLACE, Louisiana — Classes have been canceled at East St. John Elementary and Lake Pontchartrain Elementary schools in LaPlace following a fire in the East St. John school building.

Jennifer Boquet, a spokeswoman with St. John the Baptist Parish School System, tells WWL TV (http://bit.ly/1hBNjsn) officials were alerted to the fire at around 12:15 a.m. Friday when fire alarms at the school sounded.

Boquet said school district officials will meet Friday to assess the situation.

Lake Pontchartrain Elementary is located in trailers behind East St. John.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lake Pontchartrain students have been attending classes on the East St. John Elementary campus due to damage from Hurricane Isaac in 2012.
