New Adams Co. could cost $6.8M; supervisors want to consider renovating current facility

NATCHEZ, Mississippi — A preliminary estimate on construction of a new jail in Adams County is $6.8 million including the architectural, engineering and construction costs as well as other amenities including security systems, cameras, beds and laundry equipment.

The Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1vyWZ8J) the county board of supervisors heard a presentation on building a new jail Monday. Board President Darryl Grennell said a presentation will be made at a July meeting about repairing the jail instead of building a new facility.

Representatives from Benchmark Construction Company of Jackson gave supervisors a plan for a 30,000-square foot facility for 185 inmates.

A feasibility study earlier this year recommended replacing the jail.

Circuit Judges Forrest "Al" Johnson and Lillie Blackmon Sanders issued a court order last week requiring the county board and sheriff's to look into the cost of upgrading the current county lockup or replacing it.

Board attorney Scott Slover said the presentation Monday was intended mainly to satisfy the requirements of the court order.
