Search committee meets to discuss search for new Winthrop University president

ROCK HILL, South Carolina — A search committee is meeting to begin reviewing possible candidates for a new president of Winthrop University in Rock Hill.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported ( ) an eight member panel of trustees and a faculty member were meeting Thursday to review applications for the school's 11th president.

Former president Jamie Comstock Williamson was fired last summer after less than a year in the post.

School officials said no vote was planned at Thursday's closed-door meeting.

The search committee will eventually recommend a candidate to the school's board for a final decision. Officials have not said how many applications they have received.

Winthrop is using a private consultant to help find candidates. The school hopes to make a decision this spring.

Provost Debra Boyd has been serving as acting president.
