Police report number of homicides this year in Detroit down from 2011; other major crime up

DETROIT — Police say the number of homicides so far this year in Detroit is lower than the same period in 2011.

Godbee says the numbers are "sobering."

The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News report that Chief Ralph Godbee on Monday night discussed the numbers at a community meeting. As of Monday, there had been 98 homicides in Detroit compared with 102 by the same time in 2011. The number of other major crimes, however, is higher.

Godbee says the numbers are "sobering."

The department's other major crime statistics run from a period from Dec. 27 through April 22. Police say there's been about a 2 percent increase in assaults, burglaries, larcenies, rapes, robberies and unlawful driving away of automobile compared with the same time in the year-ago period.
