Conn. posts April jobs loss, 2nd month in a row as business economist sees struggling recovery

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. — The state Labor Department says Connecticut's unemployment rate remained stuck at 7.7 percent in April as 4,100 jobs were lost.

The agency also said Thursday it revised March's job loss to 2,000, a slight improvement over an initial report of 2,700 jobs lost.

Condon says a severe winter last year and unusually warm weather this year make comparisons difficult.

Connecticut is still up 5,300 jobs this year due to strong growth in January and February. Andy Condon, director of the agency's Office of Research, says that's evidence of a gradual jobs recovery.

But Peter Gioia (JOY-'uh), an economist at the Connecticut Business & Industry Association, says the state's economy is still struggling to recover.

Condon says a severe winter last year and unusually warm weather this year make comparisons difficult. He says employment increases typical in the spring never happened, partly because job levels were already high due to the mild winter.
